What is (not) a philosophical question?

A philosophical question versus a mere question: A philosophical question is not simply any question in the form of an interrogative sentence, but rather a problem of substance. It is aimed at a need for intellectual clarification. Or, as one might put it pointedly: „A philosophical question is not a mere grammatical question, but an intellectual problem that requires systematic clarification“. Concretely, this means that such a question identifies a non-trivial conflict or field of tension that cannot be answered by a simple fact or a yes/no, but only through conceptual and normative analysis. A well-chosen philosophical question thus brings to light a theoretical or normative problem that requires argumentation.

If you are convinced that you have found a question for your term paper or essay, please put your conviction to the test. Ask the AI whether your question is essentially an empirical question, or a political-moral question, or one that can be answered with „yes“ or „no“. (Always ask several times – against the grain!) If your question falls into one of these categories, you know that you do not have a philosophical question.

To draw the distinction: simple or everyday questions (e.g. „Is X right or wrong?“ without context) are not sufficient. Such banally formulated yes/no questions fall short. They can often be answered empirically or by means of a survey and do not touch upon any deeper problem. A question becomes philosophically relevant only once one examines the underlying concepts, values or contradictions. One example: „Is hunting as a hobby justifiable?“ could be answered banally with „yes“ or „no“ (for instance, through opinion polls) – which would achieve little philosophically. The subject becomes interesting, however, once one asks why and under what premises hunting as a hobby might or might not be justifiable. To do so, one must illuminate the normative categories and tensions within this subject (such as animal suffering versus tradition, nature conservation versus individual freedom, and so on). It is precisely through this that the philosophical content of the question arises.

Asking whether one may produce animals for human consumption is not a philosophical question. The conflict between an „animal-cruel morality“ and animal ethics as such constitutes the subject matter of a philosophical question, insofar as what would need to be clarified is precisely what structurally constitutes this normative contradiction, and how ethics positions itself as a critical system of reflection vis-à-vis moral practice. Moral conceptions (e.g. cultural practices), political agendas, or empirical investigations into the relationship between humans and animals are not philosophical questions, since they do not constitute open, problematic questions admitting of argumentative or conceptual discussion. A genuine philosophical question in this context requires, rather, that a normative, validity-theoretical or epistemic problem be formulated (for instance: the contradiction mentioned above itself), one that remains argumentatively open and requires a methodically grounded structure of justification – that is, a normative analysis, an epistemic analysis, or a validity-theoretical analysis.

The normative contradiction between an „animal-cruel morality“ and a reflected animal ethics can be philosophically productive in various respects – particularly with regard to its value-theoretical, validity-theoretical and epistemic added value:

The value-theoretical added value of the contradiction lies in the fact that it renders visible a normative field of tension: on the one side stand lived moral practices that instrumentalise animals or regard suffering as irrelevant; on the other side, animal ethics demands a fundamental recognition of animal welfare and moral consideration. This opposition makes clear that values do not simply exist, but can come into conflict – and can only attain their normative legitimacy through a well-founded ethics.

In validity-theoretical terms, the contradiction increases the thematic density: it raises the question of the basis on which ethics can claim normative validity at all, when it seeks to oppose established, morally divergent practices. Here the path opens toward discourse theory or validity theory – for instance in the tradition of Habermas/Apel – according to which moral norms can claim validity only if they are capable of finding general acceptance through rational agreement.

Epistemically, the contradiction has the potential to alter moral insights within the population: once it becomes clear that common moral practices (e.g. the use of animals) are not ethically justified, this can lead to a shift in consciousness – provided that the arguments are conveyed and reflected upon in an epistemically convincing manner. The contradiction thus generates cognitive dissonance and opens up space for moral development.

And finally, the question arises: does contradiction destroy normativity? Not necessarily. A contradiction points, rather, to the necessity of normative reflection: the mere fact that moral practices stand in contradiction to one another does not mean that normativity is impossible. Rather, the contradiction challenges us to legitimise norms and secure them epistemically through theoretically grounded, argumentatively open discourses (normative and validity-theoretical analyses). Thus normativity is not destroyed, but its grounding becomes methodically necessary.

Features of a philosophical question: In summary, several important criteria can be identified that a question must fulfil in the philosophical sense:

  • Problematisation rather than a mere topic: The question must formulate an intellectual problem, not merely describe a topic or intended undertaking. A statement such as „This paper compares Theory A and Theory B“ is not a question – it merely names a topic or an intention to work on something, but formulates no intellectual problem in the philosophical sense. What is missing here is a question that goes beyond mere description. A genuine question would, for instance, ask at what point or in what respect Theory A and B stand in conflict, or what philosophical insight can be gained from comparing them.
  • A field of tension rather than a trivial answer: Good questions are characterised by the fact that they reveal a relation of tension or a contradiction that must be clarified argumentatively. They do not simply amount to a ready-made judgement, but rather open up a space for discussion. Or, put differently: „A question [...] designates a space of tension that must be opened up argumentatively. It demands not merely a judgement, but a reconstruction of the justifications and a weighing of competing [...] principles.“. If the question aims from the outset merely at confirming a position (e.g. „Is Theory A superior to Theory B?“), there is a risk that one merely establishes a yes or no. It is better to frame the question in such a way that both positions are brought into relation with one another and the conditions of the arguments for and against them are examined.
  • Not forcing a decision in advance: Related to this is the requirement that the question should not merely ask for a judgement. Students often make the mistake of formulating the question in such a way that, in the end, only a winner is declared (such as „Who is right – Epicurus or Nagel?“). Such a question is of little help, since it narrows the analysis down to a mere decision. Instead, the question should unfold a problem whose clarification is the actual aim. For example, instead of „Is Nagel right with his thesis?“ a better question would be: „To what extent does Nagel's thesis depend on premise X, and what does this mean in comparison with Epicurus's approach?“. This outlines a field of problems rather than merely anticipating a judgement in advance.
  • An appropriate focus (neither too broad nor too narrow): A philosophical question should be clearly delimited without becoming overly simplistic. If it is too broadly framed, the treatment remains superficial; if it is too narrow, it loses relevance. A successful example of this balance: „To what extent can the right of democratic nation-states to control migration be morally justified, when […] minimal equality of opportunity […] is taken into account?“ This question is neither too general (not merely an overall discussion of migration) nor too specific (it does not deal only with an individual case), but allows for a reflected weighing of differing claims of justice. – In general, it holds that a precise question zooms in on a particular aspect that can be manageably worked through, yet it does not artificially delimit the problem in such a way that it becomes trivial.
  • Clearly defined concepts: Philosophical questions often employ concepts with a claim to meaning (e.g. „justice“, „knowledge“, „consciousness“, „the good“). A good question ensures that the central concepts are clear, or are clarified in the course of the inquiry. Unclear or ambiguous concepts must be made precise, otherwise the question remains blurred. For instance, instead of „Is system XY just?“ one should rather ask: „By what standards of justice can system XY be evaluated (utilitarianism versus principle-based ethics)?“. In this sense, good questions avoid vague placeholder words. (One example: the addition of „systematic“ in a question, without further specification, says everything and nothing – one would need to state to what „systematic“ refers. Such vagueness must be eliminated.)

In summary: philosophical questions aim at understanding and clarification, not at the mere establishment of facts. They often arise out of tensions – for instance between two theories, between intuition and theory, between differing standards of value or concepts – and call for engagement with these tensions. A mere restatement of known positions is not a question; a well-thought-out question develops out of a problem and leads to an investigation that can be answered in the conclusion (through a well-founded position, not through a mere assertion).

How do I develop a research question? How do I integrate it into my introduction?

Students who are inexperienced in philosophy in particular often ask themselves: How do I get from a vague interest or topic to a precise question? – Here it is advisable to proceed methodically in several steps. In essence, this corresponds to the logical structure of an introduction to a philosophical paper. One may bear the following steps in mind:

  1. Starting point: naming a concrete phenomenon or topic. At the outset there usually stands an observation, experience, or practice that prompts one to reflect. This step is meant to show why the topic is relevant at all – often by naming a real, societal, or theoretical context. (A philosophical problem appears more compelling when it is clear why it matters beyond the everyday.) – Example: In a paper on animal ethics, one might begin with: „In Germany, millions of wild animals are killed every year by hobby hunters. This practice is justified by its proponents as part of cultural tradition or as a conservation measure, yet it is increasingly subject to criticism.“. This immediately informs the reader: there is a real phenomenon (hobby hunting) and there are controversial views about it – thus motivation to think further.
  2. Presentation of the problem: working out the philosophical problem (the field of tension). Now it is necessary to show which problem or conflict is contained within the phenomenon named. It is not enough simply to raise a topic; one must make clear in what the philosophical question consists. This often means naming a contrast of values or concepts. – Rationale: Philosophy begins where a problem becomes visible that cannot be resolved by purely empirical means. – Example: Continuing on, one might formulate: „The ethical assessment of hobby hunting is contested, because it oscillates between different normative perspectives: on the one hand, it is supposed to regulate animal populations; on the other hand, it causes avoidable suffering and instrumentalizes animals as objects of human amusement.“. This clearly states the normative conflict – here, a tension between conservation/cultural tradition and animal welfare/well-being. The reader recognizes: there is a dilemma, or at least a conflict of principles, that requires clarification.
  3. Clarifying the conceptual and theoretical context: Subsequently, one should outline on which theoretical basis or with which conceptual tools the problem is to be approached. That is to say, one names the relevant theories, concepts, or authors that serve as a framework. – Rationale: This makes clear which definitions and basic assumptions are in play and on what basis one grounds one’s analysis. – Example: In the case of hobby hunting, one might state: „The philosophical discussion touches upon central categories of animal ethics such as sentience, inherent worth, and the unfolding of capacities (cf. Ursula Wolf, Martha Nussbaum), as well as ecocentric and cultural models of justification (cf. Holmes Rolston, Roger Scruton).“ This makes clear which concepts (animal suffering, intrinsic value, capacities, ecosystem, cultural tradition, etc.) are relevant and signals that one will, for instance, compare positions from various ethical theories. It is important that all concepts central to the question be introduced and defined in the theoretical section, so that the question can be treated with precision.
  4. Sharpening the focus: from the general problem to the concrete question. One now condenses the considerations made so far into one precise interrogative sentence. The tensions and concepts previously outlined provide the material needed to ask in a targeted manner. This question formulates precisely the intellectual puzzle that the paper aims to solve, or at least to discuss. – Rationale: Without this precise guiding question, one risks the paper slipping into mere description; a clear question, by contrast, compels focus and argumentation. – Example: On the basis of the conflict outlined above, the concrete research question might read: „To what extent does the practice of hobby hunting reveal a conflict between concepts of animal ethics (sentience, inherent worth, the development of capacities) on the one hand, and cultural as well as ecological patterns of justification on the other?“. This question is precise: it names two sides of a conflict and asks about the relation or tension between them (“to what extent … conflict between …?”). One sees that the question already implies that a simple answer (“hobby hunting yes or no”) does not suffice – the point is to work out this conflict.
  5. Positioning: formulating a thesis as a provisional answer. Finally – often at the end of the introduction – one formulates a thesis, that is, one’s own answer or position, which one will develop and substantiate over the course of the paper. The thesis answers the question in nuce and provides the paper with an argumentative guiding thread. – Rationale: A good thesis creates clarity about the direction of the argument and connects all parts of the paper into a coherent thread. Important: a thesis is more than an opinion; it is a substantiable claim that can be argumentatively supported (and also tested in discourse). – Example: Fitting the question above, a thesis might read: „Hobby hunting can only be philosophically understood if it is regarded as a borderline case in which cultural tradition and conservation arguments come up against the normative limits of the principles of animal ethics. It thereby shows that, consistently applied, concepts of animal ethics fundamentally exclude the killing of animals for the sake of mere recreational interest.“. This thesis takes a clear stance: it suggests that, from a strictly animal-ethical point of view, hobby hunting cannot be morally justified, because the counterarguments (tradition, conservation) reach their limits. At the same time, however, it is not an unreflective judgment; rather, it arises from weighing the conflicts mentioned (tradition vs. animal ethics) and contains testable claims (for instance: hobby hunting = borderline case, animal ethics excludes recreational hunting). – A good thesis is not trivial (it should not assert something self-evident), but rather offers points of departure for criticism and discussion. It should be formulated in such a way that one can adduce arguments in its favor in the main body, while perhaps also having to discuss counterarguments. In this way, the thesis remains open to discussion and can, in the end, either be confirmed or modified – which is itself a sign of philosophical reflection.

These five steps are, in a sense, the recipe for the introduction of a philosophical term paper, but they can equally be used to develop a question for oneself, in one’s own thinking. By going through this process (phenomenon → problem → theoretical reference → question → thesis), one ensures that the question is substantively well-founded and that one has, oneself, a clear notion of what one actually wishes to examine. Often, in the course of this process, one notices whether the question can be answered and whether it is fruitful enough – or whether it still needs to be adjusted.

Now to the practical support offered by Artificial Intelligence (language models such as ChatGPT): For students, an AI language model can be a valuable tool for progressing from initial ideas to precise research questions and theses. It is important here to employ the AI in a targeted and reflective manner – as a sparring partner in the thinking process, not as a substitute for one's own thinking. In what follows, some concrete steps and scenarios illustrate how one may develop suitable questions and theses with the aid of AI:

Steps:

  1. Put your topic idea into words and explain it to the AI: Begin by describing to the AI, in a few sentences, your rough topic or interest. Formulate what interests you and why you believe there might be something problematic or exciting about it. Do not hesitate to mention your conjectures or uncertainties already. – Example: "I would like to write a paper on the ethics of recreational hunting. I am interested in whether hunting as a leisure activity is morally defensible. On the one hand, it is justified by tradition and nature conservation; on the other hand, many think it is cruel to kill animals for fun. I wonder what lies behind this philosophically." – Through such a description, you give the AI context so that it understands what is at stake.
  2. Ask the AI for possible research questions: Now ask the AI directly for help in finding a research question. For instance: "Can you help me formulate a precise philosophical research question from this topic?" Or more concretely: "What philosophical questions arise from the conflict between tradition and animal suffering in recreational hunting?". – A good AI (such as ChatGPT) will usually respond with suggestions. It might, for example, answer: "Possible research question: 'To what extent does the practice of recreational hunting reveal a conflict between animal-ethical concepts of sentience and intrinsic value on the one hand, and cultural and ecological patterns of justification on the other?'" and perhaps even add a proposed thesis. – Indeed, this was precisely a research question that ChatGPT once generated from a description of the recreational hunting topic, complete with a fitting thesis. This example shows that an AI can often formulate a possible research question in a surprisingly structured manner, even from a rough idea.
  3. Evaluate and adjust the AI's suggestion: Critically examine what the AI proposes. Does the research question truly correspond to your interest? Is it comprehensible and precise? Does it cover the field of tension that you wish to investigate? – Here the criteria mentioned above come into play: if the AI's suggestion is too vague or contains terms that seem unclear to you, you should press further. Do not hesitate to ask the AI targeted follow-up questions, such as: "Can you explain what is meant here by 'systematically weighing against one another'?" or "The term X seems too imprecise to me – could you formulate the research question more precisely?". A good AI model will respond to such requests and, for example, define terms more precisely or offer alternative formulations. – Example (self-correction by the AI): In one case, the AI inserted the word "systematically" into a research question ("… systematically weighs against one another …"). Upon inquiry, it turned out that "systematically" served here as a placeholder and actually needed to be made more precise (for instance: logically consistent versus value-theoretically comprehensive, etc.). The AI recognised this deficiency itself when asked to critique its own suggestion: "Without further specification, 'systematically' here means everything and nothing. One would need to state precisely whether it concerns logical consistency, ethical plausibility, ontological basic assumptions, or some other dimension.". This example shows how you can use the AI to uncover weaknesses in formulations. Feel free to ask the AI to review its own suggestion: What might be unclear or clumsy about the research question? In this way, you obtain meta-feedback.
  4. Develop variants and sharpen the focus: It is often helpful to have the AI draft several variants of a research question, especially when the topic is complex. You might say, for instance: "Please formulate two to three alternative research questions that emphasise different aspects." – The AI might then, for example, provide a conceptually oriented variant ("How is the concept of 'harm' respectively grounded in Epicurus and Nagel…?"), a tension-laden variant ("To what extent does the contrast between Epicurus and Nagel reveal...?"), or a meta-variant ("What differing value theories underlie...?"), as has actually occurred in a documented example. Such variants help you decide which research question best captures the core of your interest. You can discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each variant with the AI – often, upon request, a model will also explain which one it itself considers the most promising, and why.
  5. Select and confirm the final research question: Once you have found a formulation that satisfies you, state it once more in your own words (possibly together with the AI) and check whether it meets all the criteria. This is your guiding question. You may ask the AI: "Is there anything about this research question that could still be improved or clarified?" This way, you ensure that no gaps in understanding remain. If the AI notices, for instance, that a particular term remains unclarified, you can either define it directly or address it deliberately within your paper. – Bear in mind: in the end, you yourself must fully understand and grasp the question. The AI is a tool to help you get there, but the responsibility for understanding the question lies with you. Do not, therefore, accept any suggestion blindly, but only if you can truly follow and comprehend it.
  6. Have the AI develop a thesis: Once the research question is fixed, you can, in the next step, ask the AI for a suitable thesis – that is, a possible answer. Formulate your request along these lines: "Suppose this is my research question: […] – what central thesis might I advocate for it?" The AI will typically offer a suggestion. Example from the recreational hunting scenario: the AI proposed the thesis "that recreational hunting can only be understood as a borderline case in which cultural tradition and nature conservation reach the limits of animal-ethical theories, and that animal-ethical principles exclude killing for the sake of leisure interest". – Evaluate the proposed thesis just as critically as the research question. Is it too one-sided or too general? Does it correspond exactly to the question? A thesis should answer the question, but in a concise sentence. If the AI becomes too expansive, you can ask it to be more succinct. Or if the thesis sounds too flat ("XY is ethically wrong."), ask for a more differentiated formulation that also states the conditions or reasons. A good thesis is often a complex sentence that contains a condition or qualification ("depending on whether…", "only insofar as…, provided that…", etc.), so as not to fall into a black-and-white scheme.
  7. Thesis check and self-correction: Finally, you can once again deploy the AI as an examiner. Ask, for instance: "Does this thesis really cover the research question? What counterarguments might speak against it?" This gives you a sense of whether the thesis is tenable. If the AI names relevant counterarguments, you should consider whether your thesis can refute them or whether you need to adjust it. This dialogue is enormously helpful for self-correction: you discover weaknesses in your idea before you begin writing. Strictly speaking, you are already conducting a trial discourse about your core thesis at this stage. Many students find this very helpful for sharpening their own position.

Through all these steps, it becomes clear: the AI does not simply provide ready-made results, but above all a resonance space for your own thinking. By formulating ideas, receiving feedback, asking further questions and refining your thoughts, you are ultimately practising philosophical methodology – only with the advantage that the AI provides answers at any time, allowing you, so to speak, to enter into a continuous dialogue of thought.

One might say that, in conversation with the AI, you pull yourself "out of the mire of your own incompetence by your own bootstraps." This famous image – Baron Münchhausen, who pulls himself out of the swamp by his own hair – stands here symbolically for the paradoxical self-help made possible through the use of AI. What at first appears as entrenched cluelessness (the "mire" of unclear ideas) you overcome by using the AI as a mirror and catalyst. What matters is this: you yourself steer the process of clarification. The AI provides food for thought, criticises formulations, suggests alternatives – but the evaluation and the final choice remain with you. In this way, you not only learn to formulate a good research question and thesis, but also improve, quite incidentally, your capacity for self-correction and philosophical argumentation. Ideally, you emerge from the dialogue with the AI with the feeling that you truly understand your question and can answer it with good reason – a feeling as though you had pulled yourself, mentally, out of the swamp and onto solid ground.

A scholarly paper – especially in the field of philosophy – should not simply present its research question without mediation, but rather develop it step by step out of the subject matter. This means that, in the introduction, you methodically lead the reader towards your research question and make clear why precisely this question must be posed. A merely grammatically formulated question does not suffice; what is decisive is that you disclose an intellectual problem. In other words: a philosophical question identifies a conflict or a field of tension that cannot be answered through simple facts, but rather requires conceptual analysis and argumentation. The art now consists in laying out, retrospectively from your already developed question and thesis, a logical path within the introduction – a procedure that may occasionally strike a novice as though one had to pull oneself out of the mire by one's own hair. Yet with a clear method, this feat can indeed be accomplished.

Below you will find concrete steps by which you can methodically and argumentatively derive your research question within the introduction. These steps are mechanically applicable and help render the introduction comprehensible and purposeful for your readers (in didactic terms, one also speaks here of guiding the reader). Please note: this derivation often also mirrors the path that you yourself took in developing your question and thesis – including the moments of insight and the corrections that arose, for instance, in conversations with fellow students or an AI. Make use of this reflection in order to render your introduction all the more authentic.

Steps for deriving the research question

  1. Choose a starting point: Begin with a concrete observation, fact, or practice that illustrates your area of inquiry and underscores the relevance of the topic. This opening should show why the topic warrants reflection beyond the merely everyday. Example: In a paper on animal ethics, the starting point could be the common practice of recreational hunting: for instance, noting that in Germany millions of wild animals are killed annually by recreational hunters – a figure that touches upon both cultural traditions and conservationist arguments. Through such a concrete point of departure, it becomes clear to the reader wherein the practical significance of the topic lies.
  2. Work out the problematisation: Subsequently, it is necessary to render visible a philosophical conflict or contradiction that arises from the starting point. It does not suffice merely to describe a phenomenon – you must show which values, principles, or concepts collide at this point. Philosophy always begins where simple answers no longer suffice and a problem must be thought through more deeply. Example: In the case of recreational hunting, a normative conflict emerges: on the one hand, its proponents defend it as a legitimate tradition or as a means of wildlife regulation; on the other hand, its opponents criticise the unnecessary suffering and the instrumentalisation of animals for the sake of pleasure. By naming such fields of tension, you justify your research question as a necessary philosophical investigation rather than as a mere yes/no question.
  3. Clarify the conceptual and theoretical context: Now you delineate the theoretical framework within which your question is situated. Present the key concepts, theses, or theories that will be drawn upon in analysing the problem. In doing so, you signal on what basis you will be arguing. Example: In the recreational-hunting scenario, you would here name the relevant positions in animal ethics – for instance, pathocentric ethics (emphasising sentience, as with Ursula Wolf), capability-oriented approaches (Martha Nussbaum), ecocentric perspectives (Holmes Rolston), or conservative ethics (Roger Scruton). These points of reference show the reader which normative standards and concepts will play a role in what follows, and prepare the understanding of the problem.
  4. Sharpen into the concrete research question: Now condense the preceding considerations into your guiding research question. From the tensions and theoretical references sketched out, it should follow logically what question arises from them. Formulate the research question explicitly and precisely, so that it is clear which intellectual puzzle you intend to solve. It is important that a precise question keeps your paper from drifting into the merely descriptive and provides a clear argumentative focus. Example: From the conflict surrounding recreational hunting, the following research question could arise: “To what extent does the practice of recreational hunting reveal a conflict between the animal-ethical concepts of sentience, inherent worth, and capability flourishing on the one hand, and cultural as well as ecological patterns of justification on the other?”. One can see how, here, the previously mentioned elements are bundled into a concrete guiding question.
  5. Positioning through the thesis: Directly following the question (often even in the same breath), you should present your working thesis. This provisional answer to the guiding question gives your reader a frame of orientation: it shows which direction of argumentation you will pursue. Formulate your thesis clearly and with intellectual ambition – not as an incontrovertible truth, but as a well-groundable claim that you will examine in the main body. Example: For the research question above, the thesis might read: “Recreational hunting can only be philosophically understood if it is regarded as a borderline case in which cultural tradition and conservationist arguments reach the normative limits of pathocentric and capability-oriented ethics. It shows that animal-ethical concepts fundamentally exclude the killing of animals for mere recreational interest.”. This thesis makes clear where the journey is heading, and establishes a guiding thread for the entire argument.
  6. Methodological positioning (brief reflection): At the close of the introduction, one or two sentences may be added to indicate how you intend to proceed in addressing the question and the thesis. This brief methodological preview explains the argumentative logic of your paper from the outset. You might, for instance, mention that you will carry out a comparison of theories, analyse central concepts, or weigh normative positions against one another – depending on what corresponds to your approach. In doing so, you show the reader what kind of answer to the question is to be expected, without anticipating the main body. In this way, the introduction appears rounded off, and the reader understands how the research question and thesis will be examined in what follows.
